This year, Andrzej Pągowski, one of the most prominent Polish graphic and poster artists, celebrates the 40th anniversary of artistic endeavors.
On that occasion, we invite you for an exhibition presenting the most important posters of the master’s output.
Born in 1953, he graduated with honors from the Professor Waldemar Świerzy’s Poster Studio at the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts (also known as the State Higher School of Visual Arts). He is an author of more than 1200 posters, published in Poland and abroad since 1977. In addition, he is involved in book and press illustrations, music album covers, stage design and television scenery, film screenplays and music videos. He engages in paintings. He is a creative director and owner of the KreacjaPro company. From the inception of his career he has been associated with Polish cinema, theatre and music scene. He designed hundreds of posters for Polish cinema, including films as essential as “Man of Iron”, most of Kieślowski’s work as well as the cult Stanisław Bareja’s comedy “Miś”, and Stanisław Tym’s “Ryś”.
He collaborated with a vast majority of the most prominent Polish directors, for instance Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi and Agnieszka Holland, just to name a few. Frequent recipient of awards at Polish and international poster competitions, including the Chicago International Film Festival.
His works are presented in the world’s most famous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City and San Francisco or the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The MoMA named the “Wolf’s Smile” poster as one of the 100 most essential work of the modern art.
The exhibition of selected works from different stages of his career will be accompanied by a competition for graphic designers.
The great career of Andrzej Pągowski was launched by a poster for the play “Mąż i Żona” (“Husband and Wife”) by Aleksander Fredro, directed by Adam Hanuszkiewicz and staged in the National Theatre. Completed in 1977, his first printed work was rewarded with the bronze medal at the VIII Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno. Forty years later, along with the Master we challenge graphic designers. The subject of the contest is designing a poster for the same play of Aleksander Fredro.
The results will be announced on March 31 and the winner will receive a prize of PLN 1,500, while his work will be exhibited in our venue alongside the masterwork of Andrzej Pągowski, starting from April 7, the day of an official opening of the exhibition in the presence of the Master himself.
